PT TWC Supports the Opening of Access to Borobudur Temple by Regulating Visit Quotas for Tourists
On Saturday, June 4, 2022, a Coordination Meeting between Ministries/Institutions (K/L) was held in the Avadhana Room, Borobudur Temple Tourism Park complex, which discussed the Development of Super Priority Tourism Destinations (DPSP) of Borobudur Temple. One of the topics discussed in the meeting was the regulation of tourist visits who would climb the Borobudur Temple building. In this regard, it was agreed to implement limited visit arrangements by considering the conservation aspects of Borobudur Temple. Present at the coordination meeting were Ministries and Institutions including the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment; the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology; the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises; the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy; the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing; other K/L such as the Borobudur Conservation Center and PT Taman Wisata Candi, including the Governor of Central Java and the Regent of Magelang.
In a coordination meeting led by Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, it was decided to limit tourist visits to Borobudur Temple by implementing a quota system. A quota of 1.200 tourists will be set per day for the number of visitors to Borobudur Temple. This number is equivalent to 10-15% of the average daily number of tourists to Borobudur Temple before the pandemic. This was decided to protect and preserve the Borobudur Temple, which was beginning to be affected by the large number of tourists visiting it before the pandemic. Therefore, the basis is conservation interests. The quota policy was set at a maximum of 1.200 people per day who are allowed to climb Borobudur Temple. Based on this quota policy, a special pricing policy was decided. For domestic tourists it is IDR 750.000, for foreign tourists $100, and for students (groups) (school/non-individual) is Rp5.000. This special ticket policy is only for tourists who wish to climb the Borobudur Temple. The quota policy for this special ticket will be implemented through an online reservation system. It was also conveyed that in addition to wearing special footwear, tourists who purchase special tickets to climb the Borobudur Temple will be accompanied by a tour guide ( ) which is specially prepared and has a competency certificate from the Ministry of Education and Culture as well as a hospitality certificate from the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy.
PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan, and Ratu Boko (PT TWC) supports the quota policy with special tickets, as a policy that prioritizes conservation aspects. Based on monitoring results from the Borobudur Conservation Center regarding the preservation of Borobudur Temple, sections with worn stone and damage to several reliefs have been found. Visitor charges (over capacity) which is excessive is also feared to have an impact on the preservation of Borobudur Temple, including the reduction of the land contour of Borobudur Temple.
"As stated by Mr. Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, the 1.200-tourist-per-day tourist quota is specifically for visitors climbing the Borobudur Temple grounds. For regular visitors, the tourist quota will follow the provisions of the COVID-19 task force during this pandemic. We hope the pandemic will end soon so that tourists can visit the Borobudur Temple Tourism Park more freely. Regular tourists can explore the Borobudur Temple Tourism Park while enjoying the beauty and splendor of the temple, even in the courtyard. This remains the same as the current situation," said PT TWC President Director, Edy Setijono.
“We still accommodate regular tourists who will visit Borobudur Temple Tourism Park, with regular entrance ticket prices, namely for Adult/General Tourist tickets of IDR 50.000,-, Child/Student Domestic Tourist tickets of IDR 25.000,-, Adult/General Foreign Tourist tickets of $25, and Child/Student Foreign Tourist tickets of $15. This ticket allows tourists to tour Borobudur Temple Tourism Park up to the boundary of the Borobudur Temple courtyard/yard, but are not permitted to climb the Borobudur Temple building. Based on the decision of the coordination meeting above, PT TWC is preparing a technical Standard Operational Procedure (SOP) for its implementation and will coordinate with the Borobudur Conservation Center (BKB). This SOP is expected to improve the quality of service to tourists. The decision will be implemented after the technical SOP is ready,” concluded Edy Setijono.
